Japanese Packaging

This type of packaging, much of which originated in rural areas, is a part of Japan’s cultural heritage. It cannot be mass produced and for this reason is a disappearing tradition. But it imbues a love of spiritual things, a love that lovers of the handmade object make haste to reclaim. There are two main divisions of the packaging---Utilitarian, which honors the wisdom that comes with everyday life, and Packages as Works of Art. Students will create a wall hanging by uniting long objects in the Japanese twining technique; a bundle, a package wrapping five eggs (using stones instead!). If time they will learn an open hex weave garlic basket and a scoop.
