Creative Baskets

1. Design and create one or more personalized baskets.

Baskets can be created to express specific thoughts and ideas. Exploring creativity exercises, students will use Sculpey clay to develop several designs, and from this experience choose one or more of these to create a personalized container, choosing from a wide variety of materials supplied by instructor. Students are invited to bring any materials they wish to add to the mix.
Bring: 1 12-oz pkg Sculpey clay, 1 pr. clippers, 3 small bottles paint, paintbrush. Materials fee: $10.


2. Creating a container from a flat surface

Students will discover the possibilities of designing an upright container from a flat surface, exploring such techniques as fingerknitting, knotless netting, twining, crochet, and twill plaiting. Many unusual materials will be explored and manipulated, such as handmade and watercolor papers, pvc tape, copper wire, vines, and hemp. Bring clippers. Materials Fee: $12


3. Sculptural Baskets
It has been said that there are only three artforms that can be called truly American: quilts, jazz, and baskets. In this workshop, students will discover new materials and develop techniques to create sculptural basket forms. Such techniques as shaped plaiting, Japanese packaging, knotting, and knitting will be explored as well as use of molds, bonding agents, and fibers to create a variety of sculpture examples.
